Haiti Devastated
September 18th, 2008 by Sean
I just received this email from David Krogh, who is a leader in Lord’s Harvest International (the missionary wing of the Church of God Abrahamic Faith). They been actively working in Haiti spreading the gospel of the kingdom and the creed of Jesus for years and there are a number of churches there connected with their ministry. (For more on the COG’s work in Haiti, click here). The saints there are in dire need. Here is what their Haiti contact said (please note, the pictures were originally attachments, I inserted them in the email body):
Thank you so much for your recent e-mail. That proves you really care about me and my people in Haiti. I really appreciate you in the Lord for love and compassion.
I could not communicate with you earlier because bad weather in Haiti also means bad Internet signals. Thank God my family and I are well. I have contacted the other pastors in the network, they are fine as well. The last four hurricanes have completely destroyed Haiti . According to government reports there are more than 1,200 deaths and about 800,000 people are homeless. In many areas where deaths have been registered, for example in Gonaives which is located north of Port-au-Prince the water was as high as 3 meters the night hurricane Ike passed by and caused over 500 deaths just in Gonaives 130 km north of Port -au-Prince. In Cabaret another city north of Port-au-Prince as well, about 50 people died in just one night. Among those died in that particular city 27 children from an orphanage perished by the time they were able to reach to them.
There is a lake in the southeast region by the name of The lake of Miragoane . That lake has caused great destructions to all the villages around it. Hundreds of people are believed to be dead. In that area there was a bridge which connected the south and the other part of the country that has been submerged completely under water. As of now the only way to the south is by using small boats that you pay a fee and they will take you to the other side of the water. That traffic the fishermen has created is so dangerous many over loaded boats have turned over and created more chaos. The USA has already sent an aircraft carrier last Monday. They sent a few helicopters to help with the distribution of water and food to the people who were still on roof top for over a week in Gonaives since no vehicle was able to go around the city.
France also sent an aircraft carrier to the south to help with the rescue mission. Canada , Venezuela , Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic will also be part of the rescue mission by sending helicopters, food, water, medicines, and other supplies to Haiti . I know the international media will not take the time to detail everything the Haitian people are going through at this moment, so this is the reason why I described the situation as much as I can to you. Putting together what you hear and see from the media in addition to what I explained you should definitely equal to what is happening here in Haiti.I personally have a part of my house fell down in Croix-des-Bouquets. The outdoor toilets in Bellanton¢s school have been destroyed. We have three church buildings that have been destroyed in Savanette. Many of our members have lost their houses. My country is facing a serious catastrophic situation. We are soliciting your prayer. All agricultural plantations have been devastated. Within one to three months the country will be in grave misery without any name.
They estimated about 300,000 Haitian children will be suffering from malnutrition and unable to go to school. The poverty will force many families to be divided since many parents won’t be able to take care of their children.
Please continue to pray for Haiti as you may know already, they believe more hurricanes are still on their way to hit the Caribbean regions again. Please find attached pictures of some places and my house which was damaged by the hurricane Ike recently.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Blessings to you.
In His mercy, Lesly Bertrand
The following was the note David Krogh sent out in response to this email:
We have been anxiously awaiting word from Pastor Lesly Bertrand regarding conditions in Haiti after the recent hurricanes. Below is a letter we received yesterday from him. In light of this serious condition, the Lord’s Harvest Board would like to invite you to send contributions to help buy food for these needy people. Please send funds with a notation “Haiti Famine Relief.”
