don’t know if this is the right place for this post but here it goes:
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.” Jm 1.13
The OT says YHWH tested men like Abraham [Gen 22] as well as the nation of Israel [Ex 16.4]. YHWH also took His only begotten Son to the desert to be “tempted” [Mat 4].
What is the difference, if any, between “temptation” and “testing” in the Bible?
I think in Mat 4 the temptation is not from God but Satan
perhaps temptation is in relation to sin and testing is in relation to being faithful?
then of course there is the Lord’s prayer…daily requesting God to lead us not into temptation…
It seems to me that our faith is to be tested. It’s for our perfection,
or our promotion. Satan seeks such opportunity to destroy us during such times. God allows it for our good.
Temptation is something we ought not to want to be led into, but it’s also
something we can not avoid. It’s also something we can escape from. If we can learn to turn our thoughts to Jesus in the midst of
the temptation, looking unto him, though it be a struggle at times,
we can learn how to overcome.
A man can not look unto Jesus and the worldy things at the same time. One or the other will prevail. The power to prevail comes from
Jesus. We must choose to make the heavenly connection. To become conditioned to doing that will build in us a strength of God.
I’m certain that Abraham had to look to the promise of God when he
prepared to offer up Isaac and walked up the hill. He had to do it
when he clave the wood and brought the fire. He continued on and
received the promise. He overcame and gave the place a name.
Satan wants to lead us into temptation that we may fall. God is willing to lead us out of it that we may overcome.
Sean,
my point regarding Mat 4 is that “Jesus was led up by the Spirit [God] into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil”, not that God [Spirit] Himself tempted him [cp. Mar 1.12; Lu 4.1].
so we should pray to the Lord God not to test us via temptation?
PS: The Greek for tempted (peirazō) can also mean “test.” So it looks like the words translated as “test” and “temptation” are synonimous, i.e. powerful, strong, are they not?
