Giving THANKS when Facing the Impossible
November 20th, 2009 by Angela
“Give thanks to the LORD, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.” ‘And when they began singing and praising, the LORD set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were routed.” 2 Chronicles 20:21b-22.
This story about God’s divine rescue of King Jehoshaphat & the people of Judah found in 2 Chronicles 20, is probably one of my all-time favorites of the Bible. I love it, because it sets up the scene of a completely impossible situation; circumstances that are out of their control; facing a reality which overwhelmingly spells doom and gloom for God’s people. In fact, the situation is so dire, that King Jehoshaphat was afraid and proclaims a fast throughout the land. 2 Chron. 20:3 states that the King ‘turned his attention to seek the LORD,’ and in the following verses, we can find Jehoshaphat and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, praising and worshiping God.
”O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on Thee.” 2 Chron. 20:12.
This story serves as a powerful example that when we face overwhelming obstacles in our own lives, or we are hit head on with something that we have no idea about what to do, we can look at King Jehoshaphat and learn from him.
Jehoshaphat did the following to face his challenge:
1. Turned his attention to seek the LORD & kept his eyes on God
2. Proclaimed a fast
3. Praised God
4. Listened to the words of God’s prophet
5. Worshiped the LORD
6. Trusted God
7. Gave thanks to the LORD
8. Went out to face the battle
9. Sang & praised the LORD
10. Made a firm stand and watched God move
In 2 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul advises us “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” It’s easy when we’re facing a giant problem to fix our eyes on it and be easily consumed and discouraged by it. We see nothing else. But, Jehoshaphat’s story is an awesome reminder that when we turn our eyes upon our mighty and powerful God and give thanks in the midst of it, He can make the impossible become possible.
Whatever you may be facing today, join with me in fixing our eyes upon the LORD God Almighty, whose power and might are in His Hands, whom no one can stand against. No problem is too great for God. Let us take our eyes off of our problems, and sing, praise, worship, and thank our Heavenly Father who “withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11.
“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From whence shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2.
Were it not for God I would have no help at all. Were it not for Jesus, the darkness would overtake me. I was taken to an evil place
where I was being led into great evil. There was a great hatred and a love for evil all around me. The enemy was trying to corrupt me and take my soul away from God. Then I awoke, and turned my thoughts to the Lord because the spirit of God awakened me.
Though I be abused for a season, God will deliver me. Therefore I have no need to worry over what the enemy may do to me. My hope is in God who saved me and put me into his glorious kingdom
by Jesus Christ.
