Victory in Jesus Christ

By Vince Finnegan

1 Peter 3:22   who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him

Jesus in his earthy ministry had complete authority over demons. How much more so after he ascended? Jesus is seated at the right hand of God, exalted to the position of the most honor and power in the heavens and earth. He is closer to Yahweh than the cherubim.

Colossians 1:18-20   He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him

Heaven and earth suffer greatly due to the sinful acts of the devil and Adam. Jesus put it all right again.

Ephesians 1:19-23 - God wants the eyes of our understanding to be enlightened regarding the exalted position of Christ and its relevance to our spiritual well-being and supernatural power.

Ephesians 2:4-6 - We are now connected to Christ in his death, resurrection, and exalted position in the heavenly places. Christ is seated at the right hand of God, so then, we too must be in this same place, which indicates access to the same kind of power and authority.

Colossians 1:13-14   For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus and his followers had power over unclean spirits. In preparation for his departure with the ascension, he taught the disciples about the holy spirit, which would enable his followers to function as he had on earth and to be led by him while he was in heaven. They were clearly taught that the power they operated with him was not a temporary happenstance, but rather a type for what they could continue to do, even after he was gone. Their ministry was to be a continuation of his in which they would preach the Kingdom of God and operate the same delivering power so that the captives could be set free (Luke 4:18-19).

Matthew 10:1, 7-8   Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

"And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

The record in Matthew 10 spoke to their immediate commission and to their ministries after Jesus ascended. He fully expected them to carry on his ministry after he was gone.

Mark 16:15-20 - Right before Jesus’ ascension, he stated clearly the power and authority the church has.

Luke 24:49   And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

Acts 1:5-8   For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now….you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

The church has been given incredible power and authority to partner with Christ to accomplish the will of God on earth. The night Jesus was taken into custody, he gave detailed instruction regarding the coming of the holy spirit. After he was resurrected and reunited with his disciples, he returned to the same subject matter.

John 20:21-23   So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained."

When Jesus said that if they forgave or retained the sins of others that it would be so, he confirmed their partnership with him. In essence he was saying, “I will stand with you and support your endeavors.”

Matthew 16:19   "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."

Matthew 18:18    "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.

John 14:12   “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.”

Luke 4:18-19   "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,

TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD."

According to Jesus’ words, he lived supernaturally because he believed what God said about him and the spirit of Yahweh empowered and directed him. God worked through him to do the signs, wonders, and miracles. Jesus commissioned us to be like him. Do we believe God’s words about us, and will we allow the spirit of Christ to empower and lead us?

  1. Powerful. We often forget the incredible power that resides in us. We are partners with Christ here on earth.
