Matthew 5:1-3 "Poor in spirit" is a metaphoric way of saying the humble. The first thing Jesus taught was that the humble inherit the kingdom.

James 4:1-10 He strives on his own to provide for himself and causes unlimited destruction. God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. The humble understand that they cannot live life by their own terms with their own ability. The devil devours and is prideful!

1 Peter 5:5-10 Anxiety is a signal that you are doing things on your own without faith in God.

Matthew 6:9-15 Prayer is the manifestation of a humble person.

  • "Our Father" makes clear our relationship with Almighty God. Deuteronomy 10:14, 15, 17
  • "Who is in heaven" implies His almightiness, superiority, sovereignty, and authority.
  • "Hallowed be your name" speaks to His character holy, holy, holy. It is also a form of praise which is always a great part of prayer for the humble soul.
  • "Give us this day our daily bread" shows that we need His help to have all that is needed this day to live a godly life. The prayer is a daily one.
  • "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" indicates that we sin and need forgiveness daily. Forgiving others is our way of life which we cannot do on our own ability.
  • "Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil" implies that temptation and evil will overwhelm us, but we are instructed to seek His help.
1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Peter 2:9 We can be victorious over temptation if we depend upon God.

Colossians 1:9-12 The help that God will supply is all we need.
