Upper Room Teaching

The most comprehensive Biblical teaching on the holy spirit is presented by our Lord in John 13 - 17.

John 14:1 Very obvious separation of Jesus and God.

Verse 3 Dwelling place is the Greek word "mone" which is only used twice in the Scriptures (here and in verse 23). The dwelling place of God is the Church.

John 14:7-10 The words and works of Jesus revealed the Father to the world. John 1:18; Hebrews 1:1-4; John 3:34; 4:34; 5:30 and 43; 6:38.

John 14:11 He had oneness with God because he always obeyed His will and spoke His Word.

Verse 12 The immediate context of this statement relates to his relationship with his Father. The greatest work he did was to stay in constant fellowship with God.

Verse 15 If we love Jesus we keep his commandments. Verses 21-24; 15:10; I John 2:3-5; 5:2 and 3.

John 14:16 The holy spirit is connected with obeying his commands.

"Forever" - aion - "age"

John 14:17 Spirit of Truth. The spirit dwelled with them because it was in Christ and shall be in you.

Verse 18 "I will come to you" (verse 3).

John 14:23 He told them he was going to the Father (verse 2).

John 4:21-24; 7:33-39; 14:26

John 14:27 Peace (verse 1).

Verse 28 Third time - "I go away and I will come to you."

Verse 29 Makes plan his coming is via the spirit not the end of the world.
