Covenant and Spirit

Joshua 9:1-15 A covenant is the strongest, most solemn, sacred binding agreement that can be made between two parties. It remains in force until it is completely fulfilled. Therefore it is indissoluble and cannot be annulled.

Verses 16-21 The covenant is a commitment to God and is to be enforced regardless of what the other party does.

Joshua 10:1-15 The Lord fought for Israel to honor their covenant.

II Samuel 21:1-6 Hundreds of years later God still honors the covenant!

Psalm 89:20-37 The covenant with David was everlasting. The covenant with Moses came to an end because God fulfilled what he promised.

Psalm 105:8-10; Hebrews 6:13-20 The covenant to Abraham

Matthew 26:26-29 The new covenant

With Abraham's covenant the circumcision served as a sign to Israel. That they were in a covenant with God that He will absolutely fulfill.

II Corinthians 5:5 The spirit is similar to the circumcision. It is a sign of the new covenant.

Ephesians 1:13 and 14 Pledge means earnest. The spirit far exceeds the circumcision as a sign because it is an earnest, which is a down payment that insures the full amount will subsequently be paid.

The spirit is God's seal and earnest to us of the fulfillment of the new covenant.

Ezekiel 36:25-29; Jeremiah 31:31 The spirit is God's earnest and therefore assurance He will fulfill His covenant.
