Notes:

To “Justify” is to demonstrate or prove to be just, right, or valid; to declare free of blame; absolve; to free a human being of the guilt and penalty attached to grievous sin; to demonstrate sufficient legal reason for an action taken.

Deuteronomy 32:3-4
Yahweh is a God of truth and justice. He is always right!

Gen 3:14-19; Gen 9:5-6
– From the very first sin, God demanded a just response. God demands justice and equity. Examples – Numbers 35:33-34; Deut 21:1-9

Romans 3:21-27
– “Propitiation” (or “expiation”) in verse 25 is the equitable recompense to satisfy the penalty. The only other use of this word is “mercy seat” - the lid on the Ark of the Covenant, the place of sacrifice on the Day of Atonement.

Romans 4:1-3
– Righteousness was credited to Abraham’s account when he believed what God promised.

Romans 4:5-7
– Quote of David from Psalm 32:2 If God required the just payment for our iniquities, it would require each of us to die. That would expiate us of all wrongdoing. But David spoke of man being blessed whose sin Yahweh did not take into account.

Romans 4:17-22
– Abraham was justified by faith. Sarah’s womb was dead. Abraham could not work his way into receiving God’s promise. God needed to bring Sarah’s womb back to life. This was only through faith.

Romans 4:23-24
– This was not written merely about Abraham. It also relates to us. Today, we believe that God raised Christ from the dead. And as Abraham, we now are made righteous.

Romans 4:25
– Jesus was delivered over for our transgression; raised to life for our justification – two parts to justification.

Romans 5:1
– “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God….” Peace with God!!! Until appeasement is made, there is no peace. Expiation was needed.

The Tabernacle: The Day of Atonement

Leviticus 16:2-3; 7-10
– Two parts: one goat killed to make atonement, and one presented alive!

Hebrews 9:2-9, 11-15, 24, 26-28
– Jesus paid the price. He is currently in heaven, in the true sanctuary, but one day he will come out of the holy of holies, and we will awake to life everlasting!!!

Romans 5:12-14

Through one man, sin entered and death by sin. From Adam, death reigned for all mankind. All have sinned. There are no exceptions! Adam was a type for the one that was to come.

Romans 5:15-19

Through one offense, many were made sinners, condemned for life. Through the act of one righteous man, many have been made righteous, for the justification of life.

In this chapter of Romans, one primary response is to be given in light of our justification.
Romans 5:2 – Exult! (Rejoice –KJV); 5:3 – Exult! (Glory – KJV); 5:11 – Exult! (Joy – KJV)
Your life has been justified through Jesus Christ. Let us rejoice!!!
