Awake Out Of Sleep

Romans 13:11 and 12 Now is the hour to awaken out of sleep. Our salvation is very near. The night is almost gone. The day is near! The kingdom of God is coming!

Luke 19:11-27 Jesus spoke this parable because they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.

Luke 19:28-29 Bethany is southeast of Jerusalem on the other side of the Mount of Olives.

Luke 19:30-44 When Jesus approached the city he wept over it. The city would be leveled to the ground, because they did not believe in the Messiah's first coming.

Matthew 24:1 and 2 Jesus again prophesied about the destruction of the temple. In a parallel record in Luke he also prophesied about the dispersion of the Jews. Luke 21:20-24.

In 70 AD, under the Roman ruler Titus, this part of Jesus' prophecy was fulfilled. Jerusalem was laid desolate, the temple was destroyed, many Jews fell by the edge of the sword and the Jewish people were dispersed into all nations of the world. (Deuteronomy 28:62-64) The children of Israel were told this would happen if they disobeyed the words of the covenant. (Deuteronomy 30:1-5) God is faithful. He promised that if they would turn to him with all their heart that he would bring them back to their land. The prophets spoke of a return of the people of Israel to the land. (Jeremiah 31:7-12; 32:37-44; Ezekial 34: 11-14; 36:22-24; Zeceriah 8:1-8)

Matthew 24:1-3 Jesus then went out to the Mount of Olives and told his disciples what would happen at the very end of this age. The Lord discussed the Abomination of Desolations standing in "the holy place" (Matthew 24:15). This is called the "sanctuary" in the book of Daniel (Daniel 9:26-27; 11:31). It states in II Thessalonians 2:3 and 4 that the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction, will take his seat in the "temple of God." And according to Revelation 11:1 and 2, the temple of God is given to the nations for 42 months. If these references are literal, than the Jews must return to Israel, and reset up worship in the temple just before the end of this age.

Perhaps we are witnessing what was spoken by Hosea the prophet. Hosea 3:4 and 5.

Now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. We are not to be ignorant of what God has stated, but we are to be on the alert, watching and be ready, living our lives in light of the coming Kingdom of God.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18; 5:1-11
