Liberty in Christ
By Rev. John Cortright on 10/10/2010

Galatians 5:1
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free...." (KJV)

The context of Galatians gives understanding of this liberty in Christ.

Galatians 1:6-9; Galatians 2:1-4 These verses are referring to a major issue that occurred in the first century church. The book of Acts records the narrative of this conflict. Acts 15:1; 6-12

They were saying, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." The issue was not whether or not a person could or should be circumcised, but rather that circumcision was required for salvation. This is the specific yoke of slavery that the book of Galatians is addressing.

Galatians 2:16-21 If one could have received justification and righteousness through keeping the law, then there would have been no need for the crucifixion.

Galatians 3:1-8 Abraham believed God. His faith was reckoned to him for righteousness before he ever had a child or had his offspring circumcised. Also, right from the start of his calling, he was promised that through him all nations would be blessed.

Galatians 3:17-18 The promise and covenant to Abraham was 430 years before the law was given.

Galatians 3:21-24 The law was our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ, but it did not impart life and truly fulfill the promise to Abraham.

Galatians 3:26-29 Through faith we are the children of God and heirs of the promise to Abraham.

Galatians 4:1-11 We were under the elements of the world, but now we are not enslaved to these things. Now, through faith, we are sons of God. We are not to return to the bondage of trying to fulfill the law.

Galatians 4:21-31 Here is an allegory comparing the two sons of Abraham -- the one, born of a free woman, and the other, born of a bondwoman.

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast in the liberty. We are no longer in slavery.

Galatians 5:2-6 Circumcision or not circumcision is not the thing that matters. It's a matter of faith!

Galatians 5:13-14 What are we to do with this freedom in Christ? By Love serve one another!
