Man Shall Not Live by Bread AloneBy Rev. John Cortright on 05/24/2009
Food and water are essential to sustain life. And yet, there is something far more important than physical food that is necessary for life. That is, the Word of God, and Jesus Christ, the word in the flesh, the bread of life.
John 4:31-35 -- "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work."
Job 23:12 -- "I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food."
Jeremiah 15:16 -- "Your words were found and I ate them..."
Mankind has a propensity to crave food. This seems to be normal human behavior. How many people pursue the Word of God with the same resolve, the same passion, the same hunger?
Matthew 5:6 -- "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."
Matthew 4:1-4 -- "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"
This is a quotation from the book of Deuteronomy.
Exodus 16:1ff The record of manna from heaven
Exodus 16:1 This account occurred one month after leaving Egypt and seeing the mighty signs and wonders of Yahweh
Exodus 16:2-15 The word manna means "What is it?"
Exodus 16:16-36 The manna was completely dependent upon the Word of God.
Numbers 11:1ff The people complained to God in regards to the manna
Why Manna? What was its purpose?
The manna was a pragmatic teacher of the truth that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
