John 11:1-6
God revealed to Jesus that Lazarus’ sickness would not end in death and that God’s glory would be revealed (v. 4). Jesus remained where he was because he believed this promise.

John 11:7-10
The disciples were afraid that Jesus would be killed if he went to Judea. Jesus was not afraid; he knew that the time of his crucifixion had not yet come.

John 11:11-15
Jesus understood that death is sleep until the resurrection. Lazarus died. Despite that, Jesus continued to believe God’s promise that death wouldn’t be the end. Jesus held onto this promise with intense faith.

John 11:16-26
Martha believed in the future resurrection of the dead, but Jesus challenged her to take her faith a step further. Jesus received all power and authority from the Father. Not only can he raise Lazarus from the dead, but he can also raise you from the dead, if you believe.

John 11:27-37
Jesus wept. The Greek words in v. 33 imply not only sadness, but anger. Jesus was unfairly
blamed for Lazarus’ death. Jesus wasn’t controlled by his emotions, but he didn’t suppress them either. He felt them and expressed them to God.

John 11:38-42
Jesus always gave God the glory. He publicly thanked God for the miracle about to happen.

John 11:43-44
God’s promise in v. 4 came to pass. The sickness did not end in death. God’s glory was revealed. God promises to work all things for our good (Romans 8:28). Even when we can’t see how he’s working, we must trust that he is. To overcome like Jesus, we must hold onto God’s promises.
