Ruth 2:1   Boaz, the son of Salmon, was a kinsman to Elimelech (which is important to Ruth’s destiny).

4   Boaz and his workers are spiritually minded people.

12   Ruth was rewarded for living the right way before Yahweh. The blessings were there not only because of her loyalty to Naomi, but more so to Yahweh.

Deuteronomy 32:9-14   Figuratively, the idiom symbolizes Yahweh as the Protector.  Psalms 36:7; 57:1; 91:4

17   Boaz showed great kindness to Ruth; perhaps his mother’s influence had something to do with this. Matthew 1:5 – Her name was Rahab.

20   The words “closest relative” could be translated “redeemer” and is best understood as “kinsmen-redeemer”. The ESV translated it “one of our redeemers”. As a kinsman-redeemer, under the Mosaic Law, Boaz could fulfill the duty of preserving the name of the dead by marrying Ruth.

The responsibilities of the redeemer included:

  • Numbers 35:19 The word “revenger” is the same word “kinsman-redeemer”. He is to avenge the death of a murdered relative.
  • Deuteronomy 25:5-10 He is to marry the childless widow of his deceased brother.  1 Timothy 5
  • 25:25 He is to buy back family land that had been sold.
  • 25:47-49  He is to buy a family member who had been sold as a slave.
  • 25:35 He is to look after needy and helpless members of the family; let them live with you if need be.

In all of this, we see the loving, compassionate Father caring for His children in need.

Matthew 6:43-48   We are to be like God.

Genesis 1:26-27   We are His image bearer, like Jesus.  Hebrews 1:3
