Hebrews chapter 11 is understood when we acknowledge its
relationship to the entire epistle and the immediate context
beginning in chapter 10:19 and ending in 12:29. The great subject
is living by faith with patient endurance in view of the promises.

Hebrews 10:19-25
Draw near with a sincere heart, with clean hearts,
hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, provoke one
another to love and good deeds, encouraging one another.

Hebrews 10:26-39
The sternest warning against apostasy recorded in
the epistles, reminiscent of the prophets of old. The stark truth and graphic
consequences of God's judgment pierces the heart and shocks the mind.

Hebrews 11:1
The word “faith” is used in many ways in the biblical
context of Hebrews 11. The word is defined in the first verse.

Romans 10:17
Our faith is not based upon human intellect or opinion
rather the integrity of the words of Almighty God.

Genesis 12:1-4
Abraham is the father of faith and with him we see the
origin of all genuine faith.

2 Corinthians 5:7
The common expression seeing is believing
contradicts what Hebrews teaches. We believe what we hear not what we
see.

John 8:56
Abraham rejoiced to see Christ's day not because it was his
reality rather it was based upon God's promise to him.

Hebrews 11:1
The two statements “the foundation of things hoped
for” and “the conviction of things not seen” do not communicate two
different things rather two ways of saying the same thing.

Romans 8:21-25
Our faith is directed to our hope and hope is always
future. Once hope becomes manifest it is no longer hope rather reality.

Hebrews 3:12- 4:16
The word assurance is the same used in Hebrews
11:1. Psalm 95 is referred to throughout this section.

Exodus 17:1-7
Is the historical record.
