A very interesting record occurs when Jesus was visiting a Samaritan village with his disciples.

John 4:31-36

Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

A call is a pressing invitation to take part in something.
A harvest refers to grain or any form of grown food that is gathered in and placed in storage. In the metaphor used by our Lord Jesus Christ, the soul of a man is regarded as something of value that we reap. Here, the emphasis is on a spiritual harvest.
A harvest, biblically speaking, is a gathering of fruits by doing labor according to the standards of the Word of God.

The call of God to go into the harvest is His pressing divine invitation, a holy calling of God, to take part in gathering souls that have fallen into the depths – the preaching of the good news of the Kingdom of God to win souls to God and His church.
The storehouse represents the church of God.

Jesus was speaking to people who understood what it means to harvest. They were well aware of the urgency that is present at harvest time – a time when one must be ready to seize the opportunity. He spoke of the present harvest and the need for workers to work and join him in the fields.
The Lord Jesus Christ asks us to pray the Lord of the harvest (Yahweh) to send into His harvest (the land inhabited by men) workers who:
– Are willing to work and be part of the team;
– Have a heart for lost souls;
– Have compassion for sick people;
– Have at heart to succor the unfortunate;
– Are willing to get involved in the ministry;
– Are willing to serve God and their neighbor;
– Are dedicated, determined, and courageous.

The fields are ripe and the harvest is abundant. The announcement of the good news of God’s Kingdom since the time of our Lord Jesus on earth has touched many souls who are part of God’s harvest. Up until the final day, the door of salvation and grace will remain open. Now is the time to answer that call with joy and enthusiasm and get to work immediately.
The final spiritual harvest has begun. It began among the Jews and Gentiles in Jesus’ time and will continue until its completion when Christ returns.

Let us consider together the example of our Lord Jesus Christ in order to emulate his model in our lives.

The food of our Lord Jesus Christ must be our food
John 4:31-34

The disciples were concerned about physical food, but Jesus shows that obeying the will of God is more important than natural food. Verse 6 of this chapter tells us that he was tired and sat down by a well. His body fatigue and hunger pangs were forgotten as his greatest hunger was satisfied by leading a soul to salvation.
Just as we are concerned for our physical and material needs, we must concern ourselves more to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom of God. God’s will that dominated the heart of Jesus Christ must also be our will. His food was to do the Father’s will and to accomplish His work.

Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,

This shows us that Jesus ate in order to:
– Preach good news to the poor;
– Heal the broken hearted;
– Proclaim liberty to the captives and prisoners;
– Comfort the afflicted.
This is food that is more appetizing than anything the disciples could buy. Our Master enthusiastically reached out to a lost soul with all his heart. This was his food. We should need and want this food − to win souls for the Lord − more than any natural food, any delicious meal, or any of the comforts of life.
Our Master had a great appetite to do the will of his Father. Do we have the same degree of dedication to God’s call in our lives?

The moment of our Lord Jesus Christ must be taken as our moment

John 4:35

Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
Already in the time of Jesus, the harvest was ripe. Now imagine what state it must be in today!
With wheat, it took four months after sowing before reaping the harvest. But, it’s not the same for the harvesting of souls. In the harvesting of souls, we do not tarry until tomorrow says the Lord. We do not sit idle waiting for ideal conditions. The Bible says in the epistle to Timothy to preach the Word of God in every given opportunity, whether it is convenient or not.

Jesus says in verse 35 to lift up our eyes to see. If we open up our eyes, we will see how many people around us are suffering and dying. We will begin to perceive people’s real needs and become aware that now is the time to reap.
A harvest is a well-defined event. It is a limited time opportunity. It is a time that must be seized, a moment that should not be missed. The call for the harvest of souls began with Jesus Christ and will end on his return.
The door to salvation is available today. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says: “ Behold now is the acceptable time, behold now is the day of salvation.”
The day of salvation refers to the time in which we live until the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Then will come the final judgment of Matthew 13:36 -40 where Yahweh will employ the sickle to separate the sons of the Kingdom from the sons of the devil. He will reap all those who will inherit salvation.

We must therefore take this opportunity to announce God’s plan of salvation to men, just as our Master did with the Samaritan woman, in which he ended up reaping an entire city.

John 4: 28-30,39-42.

So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,“Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?” They went out of the city, and were coming to Him. …From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.”  So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.  Many more believed because of His word;  and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.
God has overlooked our times of ignorance, but now He commands all men to repent because He has set a day when He will judge the world in righteousness. It is up to us to execute God’s purpose for the ages. When? Right Now! This is the time!

The moment of our Lord must also be taken as our moment.
