Genesis 4:1-8 The first offering reveals there is a right and wrong way to offer.

Hebrews 11:4
Abel offered a better sacrifice than Cain because he did it in faith. Faith is connected to obedience and obedience to instruction. Abel did what he was told; Cain did not (1 John 3:12). Many have followed the way of Cain (Jude 1:11).

The life of the animal was sacrificed.

Genesis 8:20
The offering had to be a clean animal, and God provided the sacrifice (6:19-7:3). Offerings done right are a soothing aroma (8:21) to Yahweh.

Two very significant aspects are: 1. offered as vicarious and substitutionary expiation for people’s sins, 2. a type for man’s eternal expiation with Jesus.

Genesis 15:8-18

Leviticus 1:1-3
Male without defect

4
– Laying hands on the animal, the offerors identified with the sacrifices as their substitutes. The sinful lives of the Israelites were committed to the animals, and the acceptability of the offerings was transmitted to the Israelites.

5
– The offeror killed the animal making an unforgettable impression that innocent life was killed for the guilty life as a substitute. The priests had to make the offering on their behalf. Blood was an important part of the sacrifice.

8
– God gave very specific instruction on how to do the sacrifice. Fire completely consumed the sacrifice signifying the sin was completely annihilated.

9
– When done right, the sacrifice is a soothing aroma to Yahweh (vs. 13, 17; 2:2, 9).
