Habakkuk 2:4 is quoted three times in the New Testament as “the just shall live by faith” (Rom 1:17; Gal 3:11, Heb 10:38).

The book of Habakkuk offers great insight on living in light of God’s promise no matter what the circumstance, the evil, and the violence that surrounds us.

Habakkuk 1:1-4
-Habakkuk’s cry to God for help.
“How long O Yahweh, will I call for help and you will not hear?” Habakkuk looked at the evil going on in his nation, seeing wickedness, iniquity, and violence. He asked God why there seems to be no response. This was during the time of the last years of the nation of Judah, before it was taken into captivity. Habakkuk cried to Go about the wickedness in the land (Jer 5:23-31, 9:2-6).

Habakkuk 1:5-11
– God’s answer to Habakkuk – The Chaldeans/Babylonians are coming
The powerful nation of Babylon will be coming from the north and they will devastate the people and the land (Jer 5:15-17, 6:22-23).

Habakkuk 1:12-17,2:1
– Habakkuk questions this punishment from an evil nation.

Habakkuk 2:2-20
– God’s Answer
Wait for it. It will certainly come. The righteous (the just) shall live by his faith.

Habakkuk 3:1-19
– A prayer of Habakkuk
“Yet I will exult in Yahweh, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.”

Hebrews 10:32-39
– You have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. “The righteous one shall live by faith.”
