1 Peter 1:18-19
We’ve been redeemed with the blood of Christ.
To redeem is to buy back, to pay off, to clear a debt by payment; to exchange for money or goods; to recover possession or ownership of by payment of a price; to liberate by payment of a ransom.
Why did we need to be redeemed? Redeemed from what?
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
WHY AM I HERE? WHAT IS LIFE?
John 5:24; 6:27, 40; 11:25; Romans 6:23
Romans 5:12-14
Now redemption makes sense. The sin is not just sins that I have committed, but rather it is sin itself − something all humanity inherited from Adam. All of us, no matter who we are, have the sentence of death appointed for our future. It doesn’t matter how young you are or how old you are; it doesn’t matter if you are a good person or a bad person; it doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” The redemption that was purchased through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ bought us eternal life – that even if I we die, we have a promise of life in the age to come. Our lives will be redeemed from the grave!!! Wow! How do you get this eternal life?
Psalm 49:1-15
“No man can by any means redeem his brother Or give to God a ransom for him − For the redemption of his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever −That he should live on eternally, That he should not undergo decay.”
Matthew 16:26 – You could gain the whole world, but lose your soul. No one could pay the price on his own. The cost was more than anyone could pay. There is nothing you can do to redeem yourself. We needed a redeemer
In the Old Testament law, there were sacrifices, temporary offerings for atonement of sin. These practices were instituted to teach and to instruct, but they could never fully redeem humanity. That’s why they had to do them week after week, year after year. The lesson was that a sacrifice was necessary for redemption. However, only a perfect sacrifice could make the necessary payment for the redemption of sin and the salvation of humanity.
Hebrews 9:11-12, 15
The redemption in Christ is for eternal inheritance! Praise God! Hallelujah!
