Christian believers share in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, which sets them free from the power of sin. But following Jesus requires giving up our old, selfish ways, much like a seed that must die to grow and produce fruit. Because sin is no longer our master, we can now live a brand-new life dedicated to God and have the hope of resurrection life in the age to come.

Romans 6:1–4
Through our union with Christ, we share in his death. But we also share in his resurrection from the dead, so that we can walk in a completely new way of life.

John 12:24–25
Jesus compares the life of being his disciple to a seed that must fall into the ground and die before it can grow and produce fruit.

Romans 6:5–7
The promise we have is that since we have been united with Christ in his death, we will also share in his resurrected life. Our old self was crucified with him on the cross so that sin would no longer rule over us.

Following Jesus requires self-denial, taking up our cross, and surrendering our right to live our own way and for ourselves.

Because sin is no longer our master, we should not allow it to rule our bodies or direct our choices. Instead, we are to offer ourselves to God as people who have been brought from death to life—free from the tyranny and dominion of sin.
