The book of Genesis ends with the children of Israel moving to Egypt due to the famine in all the land. Israel’s (Jacob’s) son, Joseph, had risen to oversee all the land of Egypt under Pharaoh.

Exodus 1:6-14 – A new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. Some suggest that this means an entire new Egyptian dynasty. He appoints task masters over the children of Israel, and they afflict them with hard labor. This time in Egypt is referred to as “the house of slavery/bondage” (Ex 13:3, 14; 20:2; Deu 5:6; 6:12; 8:14; 13:5, 10; Jos 24:17; Jud 6:8).

Exodus 1:22 – This slavery became very evil, as Hebrew baby boys were cast into the Nile.

Exodus 2:1-10 – Moses is born and raised in Pharaoh’s household for forty years. (He was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, mighty in words and deeds – Acts 7:22-23.)

Exodus 2:11-15 – Moses fled Egypt for the land of Midian. He lived in Midian for another forty years, and at around the age of eighty (Ex 7:7), God appeared to Moses.

Exodus 2:23-25 – God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exodus 3:1-10 – God speaks to Moses at the burning bush.

Exodus 3:16-22 – God tells Moses that the king of Egypt will not let the children of Israel go, except under compulsion. God will stretch out His hand and strike Egypt with His miracles. In the end, the children of Israel will plunder the Egyptians.

Exodus 5:1 – Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh and say, “Let my People go….” Pharaoh refuses and makes their labor even more difficult.

Exodus7:1ff – 10:1ff – Yahweh performs His signs: water to blood, frogs, gnats, flies, pestilence on the Egyptian livestock, boils on the Egyptians, hail and fire, locusts, three days of darkness. After each plague, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not let the children of Israel go.

Exodus 11:1ff – The final plague, death of the firstborn of Egypt

Exodus 12:1ff – The Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and deliverance from Egypt – the house of slavery
