2 Timothy 1:12: “For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.”

Levels of Ashamed
– Level One: what you are ashamed of is truly shameful
– Level Two: others will look down on you, ridicule you, reject you for finding out

Mark 8:27-28:
What’s the buzz on the street? Who did people think Jesus was?

Mark 8:29:
Peter’s stunning response hits the nail on the head.

Mark 8:30:
The messianic secret. Why didn’t Jesus want people to know who he really was?

Mark 8:31:
Since the Messiah’s job description includes conquering the world, reestablishing the kingdom of Israel on the throne of David, and ushering in an age of peace, justice, and eternal life, Jesus’ prediction about suffering and dying at the hands of his enemies shocked and scandalized Peter.

Mark 8:32-33:
Peter actually rebuked Jesus! However, Jesus nipped the matter in the bud immediately, knowing full well what God’s will and plan were.

Mark 8:34-35:
The cost of discipleship. Jesus has no room for fair weather disciples—either you commit your whole life or else you cannot follow him.

Mark 8:36-37:
Although following Jesus takes faith, it makes sense. The alternative is to keep your life for now and forfeit it in the age to come.

Mark 8:38:
Are you ashamed of Jesus? Are you ashamed of his words? How you live in this adulterous and sinful generation will determine your ultimate destiny when Jesus returns. (Matthew 10:32-33; 2 Timothy 2:8-13)
