Don’t be Between Two Opinions

1 Kings chapter 18 gives us great insight about not being of two opinions. I want to give you some background regarding this in Chapters 16, 17, and 18.

Ahab was the king of Israel, and he did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him (1 Kings 16:30). In chapter 17, God sent Elijah the Tishbite to go to Ahab to proclaim that there was to be neither dew nor rain these years except by his word. After Elijah gave the message to Ahab, God sent Elijah away to the Brook Cherith to be fed by ravens. When the brook dried up, Elijah was sent to a widow woman who had a son, and they were both starving from the drought. Elijah told her that her oil and flour wouldn’t be exhausted until it rained. Unbelievably, during this time, her son died, and Elijah raised him from the dead (chapter 17).

In chapter 18, in the third year, God told Elijah to go to Ahab and God would send rain upon the face of the earth.

1 Kings 18:17-19. When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” He said, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals. Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezabel’s table.”

All the people came together at Mount Carmel, and Elijah confronted the people.

1 Kings 18:21. Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

Elijah told them to prepare a sacrifice of an ox and whoever’s God answered with fire from heaven, then that would be God. The people of Israel thought that was a good idea. Ahab’s prophets prepared an ox to sacrifice on the makeshift alter of wood and called for many hours for Baal to send fire to consume it. Baal never sent fire. Elijah prepared an ox also and drenched the trench with water. Elijah prayed and said, “O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am your servant and I have done all these things at Your word. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that You, O LORD, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.” Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench – 1 Kings 18:36-38.

1 Kings 18:39. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God.”

Well, finally the people chose! After all that God had Elijah to do to finally convince the people that HE IS THE TRUE GOD OF ISRAEL AND TO FOLLOW HIM!!

What about us? Do we go through life wondering if God our Father is our God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:6. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He Is and that He Is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

We must be convinced that God is God. We must have a solid foundation of God’s Word in our hearts, so we won’t hesitate between two opinions of who God is.

2 Timothy 3:16-17. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

We must be workmen of God’s Word. We ask God to keep opening the eyes of our understanding, read His Word, be assured in our faith. We don’t want to waver in our faith. Timothy was warned by Paul not to fall in with other people who follow after myths that are contrary to God’s Word.

Titus 1:9. holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able to both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

If we don’t hold onto sound doctrine, what the Scriptures really say, then we won’t be able to know those things that are contrary to God’s Word. We won’t be able to tell the difference between truth and error.

Ephesians 4:14. as a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.

It may sound good, but it is empty and void of God’s true Word. We are to grow up and stand on the true Word of God, but you must know God’s Word and put it into your mind and heart. We are to grow up and take responsibility of our choices and follow the one true God.

2 Peter 1:1-2. But false prophets also rose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned.

There are people today around us who teach false doctrines and cause so many people who are of multiple opinions to get deceived. They bring upon themselves destruction, and it causes people to lose faith. We must be workers of the Word and have a strong foundation, so we won’t fall into those traps. We must be sharp in His Word, be of one opinion, not be carried away by whatever sounds good. Stay steadfast in your mind!

1 Thessalonians 5:21. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;

Really think about what you are looking at. It may sound good and be close, but does it line up with what the Scriptures teach, or is it a different doctrine?

Ephesians 6:10-11. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

Be strong in your mind. Put on the full armor of God, which is His Word! Stand on the truth of His Word. You decide where you go in your mind. You decide to stand strong on His true Word, not on myths or traps that sound good and make you feel emotionally good but are not the truth. The devil will try to make you falter.

We need to make up our minds on the truth and not be “wishy-washy” and hesitate between multiple opinions. If we don’t make up our own minds, then someone else will make it up for us.

I would like to share a true story about President Ronald Regan. He spoke of this story in his memoirs. When he was a young man, early adulthood, his wealthy uncle wanted to buy him custom made shoes. They went to the shoemaker, and he asked him what kind of toe did he want−pointed or round? Ronald couldn’t make up his mind right then and asked for a week to think about it. Well, two weeks went by, and he still couldn’t decide. The shoemaker asked him again what toe did he want? Ronald still couldn’t make up his mind. The shoemaker gave him another week, and then two more weeks went by. After two more
weeks, Ronald received a package in the mail. The shoemaker finished his shoes with a note that said, “Since you couldn’t make up your mind, I made it up for you”. Ronald opened the package and inside were his new custom-made shoes with one shoe with a pointed toe and the other shoe with a round toe.

Ronald Regan kept those shoes his whole adult life as a reminder to make up your own mind and then stand upon your own decision.

What a lesson! We need to do likewise with God’s Word and stand firm in the truth of God’s Word, or we will be run over by every wind of doctrine. We are to stand firm in our faith, and trust in God’s promises without wavering.

So, let me ask you, what kind of shoes do you wear?
