Lesson 9 and 10 Notes Download
1 Samuel 22: 9-22; Psalm 52: 1- 6 Doeg murdered the priests.
1 Samuel 23:1-29; Psalm 54:1-7 Ziphites came to Saul.
Psalm 62:5-8 My soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be shaken. On God my salvation and my glory rest; the rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.
1 Samuel 21:9-15; Psalm 56:1-13; and Psalm 34:1-11 were written after the same incident in David’s life when the Philistines seized him in Gath.
1-4 David in a life-threatening situation talks with God asking for help. He describes the situation and then confesses to God his trust and faith in his God.
Fear intimidates and encases us in a prison of despair and anxiety, forcing us to do what we should not do or preventing us from doing what we should do. David does the right thing by going to Almighty God, seeking His assistance, and he declares his faith to his God. “In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?”
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity [cowardice, fear] but of power and love and discipline [self-control, sound mind].
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment [torment], and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
Romans 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Psalm 56:8 Tear bottles, also known as tear catchers or tear vials, are small glass bottles used to collect and store a person’s tears. The idea behind keeping tears in a bottle is remembrance. Here it is used to describe how God remembers all of our sorrows, pains, and griefs. While God doesn’t have a literal bottle filled with our tears, He does remember every tear that falls from our eyes. In some cultures, mourners would catch their tears in a bottle and place them as a tribute to their loved ones.
Essentially, David is saying that God knows and keeps track of all our pain and suffering in life, which is symbolically referred to as “your book”. This verse is an affirmation of God’s compassion and empathy towards human suffering. It conveys the idea that God is not indifferent to our troubles but is intimately aware of our emotions and experiences (Luke 7:36-50).
11 In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?
In the New Testament:
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
Hebrew 13:5-6 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,” so that we confidently say, “THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?”
Psalm 118 The context of the psalm leads us to believe that David is the writer. Jesus must have reflected upon this psalm often, especially in his last days. Martin Luther relished this Psalm as his favorite as it related so well to the circumstances he endured.
1-4 When we are in the midst of our difficulty, we can say with great confidence to God, “Your lovingkindness is everlasting”.
The foundation of our faith is set upon our understanding and acceptance of our God and Father’s lovingkindness; His steadfast, unchanging love is what we stand on. We believe He will help us because of His love and not our merit. “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” (Matt. 7:11)
We should reason out our faith and trust in God based upon His own words.
8 God is all powerful; man is weak. God is wise; man is not. God is all knowing; man is very limited. God is stable; man is erratic. God’s love is unchanging; man’s love is like the wind.
10-12 This literally was David’s experience.
19-22 The gate to righteousness was and is the chief corner stone, Jesus Christ. Verse 22 is quoted or alluded to in Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; Ephesians 2:20; and 1 Peter 2:7-8.
27 This may be alluding to Jesus on the cross.
1 Samuel 22:1-2; Psalm 142:1-7
